Overview

El Roman de Flamenca, obra occitana del siglo XIII, adquiere este título por imposición de su primer editor, Raynouard, que descubre el manuscrito en la biblioteca municipal de Carcasona en 1834.

Flamenca representa la mujer ardiente (no en vano, su nombre proviene etimológicamente de flameja, es decir, «llama»), pero también la luz y guía de amadores. Su belleza es empleada para convenir un matrimonio con el señor Archimabut, poderoso caballero que puede proporcionar una ventajosa alianza a su padre, el conde de Nemours. Sin embargo, la admiración que despierta la hermosura de la protagonista hace caer al señor Archimbaut en un irrevocable estado de licantropía, a consecuencia del cual Flamenca es encerrada en una torre. Sólo el joven caballero Guillem de Nevers, aleccionado por Amor, podrá ayudar a la dama a burlar los rigores a los que se ve sometida por el celoso.

El erotismo al que se entregarán los jóvenes amantes será vivido entonces como reivindicación de la libertad femenina, inscribiendo así al Roman de Flamenca en la tradición de los castia gilós o «castigo para celosos», género literario donde se sanciona el mal uso de la pasión amorosa, según prescribía el amor cortés, y cuya traducción al castellano ofrece ahora edit.um en su segunda edición.
